According to the benchmarks the drive is fine however when it comes to real world computing; i.e. where is counts the performance has dropped off in boot times, it even take a few seconds to load the standard system tray icons; when at first install every thing was pretty much instant. Boot time and virus scans seems slow too; both being only slightly faster than my raptor.

I will try moving the data to another drive; note though i want to be able to use just the SSD for everything; that is what i paid for; and doing the table space is basically a work around whcih is why i am looking for tweaks to get the most from SQL AND OS; (i am asking OCZ at the moment also but it is not looking fruitful). What i will try also is just moving the data to another drive to see if the space cleared will improve performance. So can i simply cut and paste the postgre folder to D drive; try the speed / booting / scanning etc and then cut and paste back without any problems with postgres / poker tracker

1) you ran your own benchmarks and they were fine? or the benchs you found out in the world were fine? I strongly suggest you run your own- both for this purpose as well as as having a baseline so if performance seems slower then you can rerun them and have a comparison.

2) From what I was told when I got mine... the fact that your drive seems to be performance degrading over time is NOT a good sign. That shouldn't happen. I'd check with OCZ about that. (It would also be useful to reimage that drive, run some benchs on the initial image, then re-run them once the thing has slowed down and present OCZ with that data.)

It really seems like there might be some config issue- or your controller is doing a very poor job, I wouldn't know which.

3) how did you connect it? I am assuming you connected it via sata on the motherboard right? (And not USB - which would never beat the speed of your other drive)

Hope some of that helps. Definitely you need to be running those benchs though to document the drive speed for yourself.

Yes, i will be making some benchmark tests just in case. I will be cleaning the SSD and reformatting windows; as per the OCZ forum's instructions, then try out some SSD tweaks and go from there.

1) Do you have any more tips / strategies for getting the most out of your SSD when it comes to SQL; the main area is when i am actually playing poker; i need it as smooth and glitch-free as possible even when playing 10 tables of 6 max at iPoker.

2) The only other thing that could be "slowing down the overall experience is the CPU which is "only" a quad core at 2.4. If i overclocked this would i kind of see more bang for my back with the SSD?

3) Also if i choose to keep the SSD; are you saying that i will NOT get any added benefits from spitting the logs into the raptor; is the fact that the SSD is much faster going to superceed that fact that the data and logs are split across drives?

re 2: I play on an old 2004 P4 with 3GB of ram and I can easily play 10 tables on stars or tilt... or 6 tables on merge (which is hella slow relatively). Your quad core probably runs 10x as fast as my machine. THings ran too slow for me when I had a 5400 rpm root drive and PT3 on a 7200 rpm external. Especially when playing on sites with crappy slow clients. However, replacing root drive with an SSD and leaving my PT3 on the 7200 rpm drive probably gave me 3x+ speed improvement minimum... and made stars and tilt uber fast... and teh slow clients just a little slow as opposed to dragging me into the mud.

So either ipoker is the world's slowest poker client, you have a major problem elsewhere, or your expectations are too high. Or maybe you have like a 20million hand database that is screwing you up? or your cache isn't at 100? do you have s tone of background processes running that are killing your machine? basically I don't know how a quad core with SSD could ever lag.....

re: 3: I would probably split the DB off to the raptor and let pt3, the os and poker clients run on the root drive. from what I have researched that will be your fastest solution. That has worked wonders for me.

re: 1 after a little playing around I did what I wrote in 2 above here. And if that works for me on my old machine I'm baffled that you are in some way having a glitchy experience on a quadcore. Something just isn't right.

p.s. just another user who investigated SSD.. not a PT3 rep..
