Double Rainbow - What's it all mean?

is there somewhere I can find out what all these stats mean and more importantly HOW TO USE them?
I have looked at the statistical reference PDF, but it really just explains how the stat is calculated. I want to know how do I use that information to my advantage. I use the hud and it shows me VP/PL/AF. I know how it is calculating those items, but I don't really know what they are telling me. I need a newbie guide to this stuff.
